Speaking: A Period in History Which Has Always Interested You

·        Describe a period in history which has always interested you
·        When did it happen
·        What happened
·        Why are you interested in it
History  reminds me about my school days. My history teacher used to say that I would  get a very low grades  in my history exam.
She was right to some extent because I concentrated on other subjects…
Even though history classes were boring, certain historical events  were interesting to me… especially those events   related to my country’s fight for freedom.
India was ruled by the BRITISH   for centuries and Indians fought against the British and their rules.
Once the British rulers increased the tax on salt in our country… I don’t  remember  the year exactly. It was years before India’s independence in 1947.   ( real date is  March 12, 1930).
The people were angry and they protested.
Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, led a protest march to a coastal village called Dandi in Gujarat. It is known as Dandi March or Salt March
He wanted to defy the British rule by making salt on Dandi beach without paying any taxes for its manufacturing. Freedom fighters from various parts of India joined him. It was a 24 day march. It was also an act of non-violent disobedience.
The British Govt wanted to stop the march but Gandhi  achieved his goal. Ultimately, the British realized their policy was wrong.
It is a major event in the history India’s struggle for freedom…
And I find it interesting because salt, an ordinary thing in our day to day life played a role in our country’s fight for freedom.
