IELTS Essay Inputs: Consumerism and Environmental Pollution

Consumerism and environmental pollution

1  These days, all the consumer products and goods we need
are at our fingertips.
However,
uncontrolled* consumption of these by the global population
is causing environmental pollution
and depletion of precious resources.

2   Pollution occurs at different stages of production and manufacturing.
We need raw materials and energy from nature
to produce more and more goods and services.
Unfortunately, the rigging, mining and extraction operations
for  these resources
are done in a very polluting way.

These activities cause
ecological disturbance,
destruction of natural flora and fauna,
pollution of air, land and water,
instability of soil and rock masses,
landscape degradation and radiation hazards.

3   Apart from that,
production of consumer goods in factories
results in huge amounts of toxic gases and effluents and solid waste.
These contaminants pollute the air we breathe,
the water we drink and the soil we use to grow food.

Thus, the environmental degradation caused by greedy consumers  poses a threat to all forms of life on planet earth.

(1.       Thus, the environmental pollution caused by consumerism endangers life on planet earth.)
(2.       Thus, the pollution caused by consumerism makes life difficult on planet earth)
